March Wine Club: Lesser-Known Grapes of Northern & Central Italy

It’s estimated that Italy is home to more than 500 indigenous grape varieties. While names like Nebbiolo, Vermentino, Sangiovese, and Pinot Grigio are household names in the U.S. today, there are plenty of grapes that remain less common and known. As D.C. brings some pleasant springtime weather our way in the month of March, we have chosen some delightful warmer-weather selections that feature some lesser known, but relatively prolific grapes from Northern and Central Italy. Cheers, friends!

CIRELLI LA COLLINA BIOLOGICA Pecorino Colline Pescaresi IGT 2022

100% Pecorino

Abruzzo, Italy

Fresh and intense aromas of orange blossom, white grapefruit, and pear jump out of the glass. The palate is structured with flavors of ripe apricot, Meyer lemon tart, and salty firm cheese rind. Light-medium bodied with integrated acid and a chalky and saline mineral throughline. Tons of options for spring food pairings, but we love this one with thin crust white pizza and pasta al limone with a sprinkling of fresh herbs!

Cirelli is located just 8 kilometers away from the sea. The certified organic farm is situated on 22 hectares of extremely fertile land, including olive groves, vineyards, crop fields, and animal breeding areas. Francesco and Michela of Cirelli believe that nature dictates its own laws, and those laws are at the center of their farming practices. Farming procedures such as crop rotation and natural fertilization via animal grazing on the soil are just a couple of ways in which the farm honors the land.

BIGAGNOLI Chiaretto di Bardolino DOC 2023

80% Corvina, 10% Rondinella, 10% Molinara

Veneto, Italy

A glorious coral blush color with inviting aromas of tart red cherry and fresh peony petals. The palate also features notes of high-toned red fruit with flavors of crunchy cranberry and red currant. Acid provides a clean  A pleasant bitter herbaceousness on the finish, reminiscent of Mediterranean garrigue and green almond. Pair alongside spicy tuna on crispy rice or grilled chicken with fresh bruschetta and baby arugula!

Bigagnoli Winery began in 2012 after years of Alessio Bigagnoli’s studies, experimentation, and hard work. He began producing wine in small batches in his garage. With over 3 hectares of organic vineyard space located in the hills of Bardolino, Alessio has reached an annual production of 10,000 bottles, or about 830 cases. Within the vineyards, he grows all native varieties of Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, Garganega, and Oseleta.
