May 2025 Wine Club: Native French Varietals in the Southern Hemisphere
Some of the most well-known grape varieties hail from France (or at least that is what the historical and ecological information we have today tells us). Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Syrah, among many others, all have original ties to various regions of France. Historical events and circumstances, including Roman influence, global trade, colonization, and replication of desirable winemaking, etc. have all led to the spread of these varieties, with many of them finding homes in vineyards all over the world. This month we are taking a look at a few varieties that have ties to very well-known French regions, but are thriving just the same in the Southern Hemisphere as well. Cheers!
VER SACRUM “Geisha Dragón del Desierto” 2023
70% Viognier, 20% Marsanne, 10% Pedro Ximénez
Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina
Aromas of green apple skin, bitter orange, and macadamia nut in the glass. The palate offers a textural experience with a slight waxiness. Flavors of crunchy white peach and lemon zest keep things fresh alongside subtle notes of almond croissant, freshly baked bread for richness. Lees aging and a bit of biological aging under flor adds complexity and dynamic, in both texture and flavor. Medium bodied with welcomed acidity to keep things fresh!
A Viognier-driven blend is most commonly associated with the Rhône Valley, especially when you add grapes like Marsanne and Roussane into the mix. While these varieties aren’t particularly common in Argentina, Eduardo Soler and two friends founded Ver Sacrum in 2012 with the idea of championing these varieties in a winemaking region that is not known for producing these styles of wine.
RADFORD DALE “Vinum” Gamay Noir 2022
100% Gamay
Stellenbosch, South Africa
Aromas of fresh mulberry, black plum, and fresh violet petals. Medium-bodied on the palate, offering ripe and generous fruit and plush tannins. Striking the elusive balance between rich and fresh, this wine definitely reminds us of some of our favorite Cru Beaujolais – think Morgon with the volume turned up – which are celebrated all over the world!
Who doesn’t love a chilled Beaujolais on a warm spring day? If you ask Alex Dale – it’s a bit of an obsession, in the best possible way. British-born and raised in France, Dale fell in love with Burgundian varieties, especially Gamay. He is one of the trailblazers behind South Africa’s Beaujolais Fest, and also imports wine from more than 12 Beaujolais producers to the country. In 2017, Radford Dale added the first new plantings of Gamay (from Beaujolais clones) in 30 years in all of South Africa. With hot, dry summers, and cool, wet winters, Gamay can thrive in Stellenbosch!
